Apple updates for the Mac community at Yale
ITS would like to update the Mac community at Yale with recent news about Apple products.
Recently, Apple held the World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco, California. The keynote focused on the delivery of a new iPhone 3Gs, the release of Snow Leopard, and changes to the Apple Hardware line.
We would like you, the Yale community, to know that we are preparing ourselves for these changes. We will provide education, training, documentation and other resources as appropriate to support these new announcements by Apple.

Snow Leopard – 10.6
Apple will soon be releasing the highly anticipated version of OS X, 10.6, also known as Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard will be Intel Support Only. Some more great news! Snow Leopard will have Exchange Support! That means, Mac Mail, Address Book and iCal will all work on the Yale Connect Email network. The cost to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 is only $29.
With 10.6 comes the release of QuickTime X. QuickTime X is a free video-editing program. QuickTime X will even make use of your Mac’s built in webcam or a USB-tethered camera, making it easier to publish video to iTunes and YouTube, or any other device for viewing.
Also in 10.6 the return of a long time favorite from OS 9 is the “Put Back” command. This command is useful to allow users to restore an item in the Trash back to its original location.
Also Apple has implemented HFS+ support in Boot Camp, nearly eliminating corruption during power or hardware failures.
Hardware Releases
This year, Apple has moved to a more eco-friendly line of computers. From the Macbook Pro 13-inch to the Macbook Pro 17-inch, these enhancements will help the environment and enhance the user’s experience. An all aluminum case, longer battery life (up to 8 hours on some models), more recharges (can be fully recharged 1000 times), lighter, and thinner are just some of the ways Apple is moving towards becoming greener. The display has the same brightness as the traditional Mac, but is now mercury and arsenic-free.
The new Macbook Pro line also includes an SD Card slot. This will enhance the experience of the digital camera users. However, Apple has removed the Express34 Card slot.
At Yale, we are integrating Apple’s changes into our own Managed Workstation Program. With this integration, we will create an improved workstation that will reduce downtime and increase protection against any vulnerability. The Managed Workstation Program will help reduce maintenance costs for computers while giving the end-user a more satisfied experience with fewer hassles.
Currently, you can purchase a Managed Workstation Mac by visiting Yale’s Sciquest website.
Safari
The latest release of Safari 4 has some innovative features, including a full page zoom, view multiple pages at once, and a JavaScript debugger, just to name a few. Safari 4 is available now for downloading at http://www.apple.com/safari/
We would like you, the Yale community, to know that we, at ITS, are preparing ourselves for these changes. We will provide education, training, documentation and other resources as appropriate to support these new announcements by Apple.
